FSG X Resound Block Party Recap

Posted by Shopify API on

Ever since our local fave live-music booking and promoting group, Resound Presents, became our neighbors back in the spring, there's been much cause for celebration. Well, better late than never! Together we cooked up the perfect end-of-summer block party to welcome them to our little Alpine Rd. enclave, show our community love, and have one hell of a time. Special thanks to all the vendors, bands, employees, friends and fam that turned out and turned up! We love y'all and can't wait to see ya again next year. The following photos were taken Saturday, Sept. 10th 2022 in the shared spaces of Feels So Good and Resound Presents. Fat Tony

Photo by Claire Marie Vogel  By E.S. Sparks Above the roar of the FSG X Resound Block Party, Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu, better known as Fat Tony, and I sit huddled over my phone in the FSG Records’ office—a loft not exactly built for recording audio during a raucous party. Throughout our conversation, you can hear the background din of bands starting, people hollering and general good times being had. But Fat Tony stays focused on the matters at hand. Speaking directly into the microphone on my phone, he answers my questions in a persistent stream of thoughts on writing, giving one’s own cultural context and upbringing their due, performing, the importance of alone time, and alternately, connection. He...

Hotel Magdalena

By E.S. Sparks Photos by daryl.next Is there anything more blissful than a lazy, sun-dappled day spent in good company? Mix in a refreshingly refined cocktail and a backdrop of 70s cool urban lake house, and you’ve found yourself at the sublime Hotel Magdalena. Just up the road from FSG off the continuous hum of South Congress, nestled away on sleepy Music Lane, the hotel is a laid-back oasis for locals and travelers alike. Built upon a historic stretch of Austin property once owned by Willie Nelson, Hotel Magdalena’s effortless feel is ideal for escaping for a while and soaking in the nature so integral to the Austin experience.  Grab your bestie, savor a sip (or a few), and lounge...

Simone Thornton

By E.S. Sparks Simone Thornton, aka Real Gold, is a multidisciplinary artist and head poster printer at FSG. Originally from South Florida, she is no stranger to walking on the wild side, and her artwork often captures what lies in the swamps of the human mind with fluorescent delight. They say that sunlight is the greatest disinfectant; strange late nights bleeding into morning are rendered in bright neon detail. Thornton doesn’t shy away from these odd moments, and manages to make it seem as if maybe, just maybe, everything will be okay? With a new mural adorning the FSG wall, Thornton has made her mark by transforming the space with her signature vibrancy and  uncanny ability to set the scene....

Shadowplay Relics

By E.S. Sparks Cenizo, also known as Texas Sage, is the official native shrub of the state and characterized by its resilience. Its violet blossoms are eye-catching, while its ability to thrive in lime-rich, rocky conditions and sweltering sun-drenched droughts make it stronger than its somewhat humble stature would suggest. They are beautifully accessible (which is not to say commonplace), and versatile enough to withstand the shade. Earthy, but potent. To quote the beloved singer Selena, another Texan native and personal inspiration to the designer who has taken root in my mind as this exquisite but grounded bloom: “Como la flor, con tanto amor.” Bea Canchola is the designer and owner of Shadowplay Relics. Self-taught and starting in 2019, she...

Christian Bland and The Revelators

Christian Bland Talks Creative Possession It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Outside the Texas State Cemetery gates in East Austin, Matt Hollywood sits down with Christian Bland (The Black Angels, Christian Bland and The Revelators, The UFO Club) to discuss psych sounds, “cordial” ghosts, channeling inspirations through his guitar and transmuting different genres into a “free-form freak-out.”    With LEVITATION Fest around the corner and a new The Black Angels album on the way, there will be plenty of chances to get your Bland fix—but don’t miss out! He will perform for the first time with the newest lineup of Christian Bland and The Revelators on Friday, August 12, 2022 on the FSG Records Stage. Doors at 6 pm,...

Ink Monster

GETTING TO KNOW THE ARTISTS AND INSPIRATIONS BEHIND YOUR FAVORITE FSG DESIGNS Gaige Shepard, aka Ink Monster Designs and head printer at FSG, recently spoke with us about his love of horror and how it bleeds through his work. By E.S. Sparks First thing that truly terrified you as a child? The Shining was the first horror movie I remember watching as a kid and it scared the shit out of me! I was terrified of the twin girls. Just seeing little kids in horror movies depicted like that is very ominous, because though they aren’t doing anything—they’re just standing there—it kind of leaves the horror to [a] mystery in your head. You don’t think of kids as being the figures in the horror...

Born and raised in Austin, TX, The Teeta is a prime example of the innovative and conscious rap coming out of the live music capital’s hip-hop scene. NEW HARLEM RELEASE - "CRY NOW CRY LATER"

Posted by Justin Weems on

After eight long years of solo projects, slide wearing, meming and surviving an Australian tour, Harlem is back with their brand new single, "Cry Now Cry Later." Coomers and Curtis started working on their new album, Oh Boy, the follow-up to 2010's Hippies back in early January. Bringing on new bassist and Fine Southern Gentlemen cofounder, Robert Cherry, we're given a more polished preview of what's to come on the record. The sound from the single is much more chill and reminiscent of Coomers' Lace Curtains and less raucous than Good Ol' Curt's Grape St., which has more of the feel of Free Drugs and Hippies. The album is due out in early 2019. In the meantime, pick up the newest Harlem tee from the...
