THE ART OF SCREEN PRINTING
At Feels So Good, we take pride in our meticulous screen printing process, ensuring every custom shirt we produce meets the highest standards of quality and creativity. Here’s a detailed look at how we bring your designs to life.
Step 1 - Artwork Creation
It all starts with an idea. Most of our clients come to us with designs ready to print, but our talented design team is also here to help if you need custom artwork. We can work with various file types, imagery, and styles to capture your vision perfectly.
For the best results, we recommend submitting vector files. For those looking to go the extra mile, please provide layered art files with chosen Pantone colors.
Step 2 - Preparing the Design
After finalizing the separations, we add crosshairs to each layer to align them perfectly on the press later in the process. For example, a project for one of our designers, Jazz, featured a four-color design, but we will use five screens.
This extra screen is a white under base to ensure the colors on top are vibrant and bring out those beautiful colors.
Step 3 - Preparing the Screens
Next, we print film positives to complete the pre-press process and start the screen making process.
In our darkroom, we start by coating screens with photosensitive emulsion. We then register the transparencies we created and place them in the exposure unit. This step burns the positives into the screens, transforming them into stencils for printing. We repeat this process for each layer of the design.
Once the screens are all burned and ready, we spray them out and let them dry. This exposes the stencils required to make the print.
Then we prep the screens by sealing off the edges making sure no extra ink gets printed through the press.
Step 4 - Printing the Design
Once your shirt blanks arrive, we print them immediately. Deliveries come in daily, ensuring a quick turnaround for you. Here you can see the white under base being printed.
The process begins with printing white ink first, followed by partial curing (or known as flashing) of the ink as shown above. After each color is run under the press and dried, the entire image is built up layer by layer.
After the all the layers of the image are done printing, we remove it off the press and inspect it for any issues.
Finally, the shirt is sent through a conveyor dryer to complete the curing process.
