{"product_id":"hamerkop-remote","title":"Hamerkop Remote","description":"Hamerkop is a pair of Baltimore-based sound\r\nnerds: Annabel Alpers, the composer, singer and\r\ninstrumentalist formerly of New Zealands Bachelorette, and Adam Cooke, a Baltimorean drummer\/audio engineer with credits that include Beach\r\nHouse, Wye Oak and Future Islands. Together,\r\nthey have created a song-cycle that contrasts the\r\noften-mundane (yet often satisfying) everyday world\r\nwith that of the idealized, longed-for fantasy, to\r\nfind the spaces in between these things, the place\r\nwhere we all feel good about our existence.\r\nHamerkops debut, Remote, started as an exploration of the sonic beauty in Alpers collection\r\nof field recordings from her homeland and travels\r\naround the world. Looped and sampled, they became a set of instrumental sounds of\r\ntheir own, and when played live in a multiple-speaker, surround-sound experience, their\r\neffect was transporting. The finished album blends these expansive sounds in choral\r\nlayers of synths and vocals, with a kaleidoscopic, almost psychedelic quality, all of it\r\nanchored by Cookes Kraut-minimal drumming.\r\nRemote is a natural progression from the criminally-underrated Bachelorette catalog\r\nseeking catharsis through the contextualizing of personal texts into lush songscapes,\r\nusing the chill of synth-pop to mask the fallible human soul hidden behind it. Far away\r\nfrom her native New Zealand with a new life and family in America, Annabel strove to\r\nfind elements of her old identity in new environs, building songs out of sonic scraps\r\nfrom remote places, as if she were sewing a blanket in which to wrap them all. As she\r\nputs it, Home for me is in two places, and its been causing a lot of creative tension\r\nbecause I wish I could be in both places at once.\r\nThe songs of Remote find depth and dimension via a rich tapestry of voices, found\r\nsounds and classic pop melodies, as constant synapse triggering from unexpected\r\nangles and algorithms reveals, by chance and design, a magical inner life scored by\r\nbirds and babies, church bells and bonfires. Genre-defying, yet familiar, Hamerkop\r\ntranslates the topography that stretches out between us into a musical language that\r\ncelebrates our shared places.\r\nThe sound of Hamerkop is multi-layered, changing as it revolves. Its the sound made\r\nby two people, but it could be all of us.\n\n1. Egg\r 2. We Can Wing\r 3. The Splendour That Was Rome\r 4. Remote\r 5. Deadwood\r 6. Polisher\r 7. Mourning Bells\r 8.
